When I was five years old, my parents bought a beef ranch in Western Oregon, moving there from Corpus Christi, Texas. I grew up just outside the tiny town of Burnt Woods, immersed in ranch life, owning and managing my own beef and sheep herds.
My father Slim has always been a big fan of classic country music. My mother Leone's tastes ran more to swing, big band and hawaiian music. For as long as I can remember, there was always music in our home. My mother sang to all of us kids all of our lives. My brother Pat wouldn't go to sleep until Mom sang "Casey Jones" for him. It was my big brother Pat that taught me how to play the guitar when I was nine years old.
I was fortunate enough to grow up during the "British invasion" era of rock and roll, but I'm still a country boy at heart.
After high school, I started working in the woods as a logger, playing rhythm guitar and singing in my big brothers band. Later, I would start several bands of my own, most notably "Knee Deep", a seven piece country-boogie-swing band that played from the mid '70's to the early '80's. It was here I first started performing my original songs in public with a band.
During the early '70's, I switched from logging to commercial fishing to carpentry. In 1985, I made the big jump and went commercial fishing in Alaska in the Bering Sea. A schedule of three months at sea and one month home in Oregon made playing in a band impossible. But the long hours on the ocean and the solitude allowed me to write constantly and develop my songwriting skills. I continued to fish in Alaska until 2000 when I'd had enough and moved to Austin, Texas, pursuing my musical dream; growing and learning every step of the way. I've warmed up nicely and I'm having a wonderful time. The songs I write are stories of my life and the journey's they have taken me on. I write and sing about what I know, what I have lived, the "truth" and my never ending search for it.
My songs are about what matters most in my life - my wife, my children, my family and my friends. They are the music I make and I am grateful for their love, support and their belief in me.
My wife Julz, who has been singing with me at home for the past twelve years, has finally joined me on stage. This has been a dream of both of ours since we met. With our union, her childhood dreams of performing and my childhood dreams of finding a musical soul mate have been fulfilled. Julz and I have discovered the truth in the old saying that "two heads are better than one". Working together has opened up possibilities to our music that we could only have dreamed of as individuals. It has allowed us to uncover and tap into a creativity we didn't even know existed and perhaps would have never found, without the support and encouragement we give each other and the trust we have in each other.
Having grown up in a family filled with exceptionally talented musicians, it was only natural that Julz would become an integral part of our musical journey.
Not only does she have a great voice that compliments mine, she brings a whole new set of musical influences and perspectives to our performing and writing. With her talent for arranging and her ear for what works best, she has brought our music and the arrangements of it to an entire new and exciting level. She has, in effect, become the producer of both our original songs and cover tunes. I always rely on Julz to tell me what will and won't work with our music and she always finds ways to fine tune the music and our presentation.
Our music has finally found it's wings and we are flying higher than we ever imagined we would. We are humbled and blessed that we are able to express the music that has always been in our souls. Our greatest joy is sharing our musical journey with as many people as we can. Our greatest hope is that you will find emotional truth in our music that speaks directly to your heart.
